Roscoe Remembered

The late Roscoe Alexander of our club, left, and former Heavyweight Boxing Champion Joe LewisRoscoe Alexander's memorial service was held today. A good representation of his bridge buddies was present, including Jim Logan, who wrote the following tribute. Jim also wanted people to see this picture of Roscoe and the immortal boxer, Joe Lewis (right) with Roscoe. (If you look closely, you can make out Joe Lewis' signature, sideways, on top of his jacket.)

As told by Jim Logan:

"Roscoe had a way of expressing his desires, so as to leave no doubt. I asked him if he wanted me to relate some of his experiences at his memorial service. He said, “Tell them all, don’t leave anything out!

The Evolution of Bill Wannen

[The following was distributed by one of Bill's children at his burial. It was typed by a daugther-in-law from a handwritten write-up of Bill's. I have taken the liberty of changing references to Charles, as his family knew him, to Bill, as we knew him. Pat Clark]

Born: Charles William Wannen, June 24, 1921 to Charles Wannen and Margaret Kennard in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY.

Education: P.S. 193, located on Ave. L, Brooklyn. Attended from Sept. 1927 – Jan. 1934, 6 1/2 years after starting. Skipped two grades at his mother's insistence, and graduated 1st in his class of 93. Bill was not happy about this, as he never socially fit in being 2 years younger than his peers! Attended Erasmus Hall High School from Jan. 1934 - Jan. 1938 and graduated 8th out of 634 students. Entered Brooklyn College in Jan. 1938 and in Jan. 1940, earned his AS degree with a B average. There was a minimum average of 80 for all students! In Jan. 1940, he enrolled at Columbia Business School and had earned his BS degree by Sept. 1941. He has noted that in Sept. 1941, he was cofounder of the 1st non-denominational BS fraternity, Alpha Phi Tau. He also served 1 year as steward for Sigma Chi, was house treasurer for one year and presided over initiation of new pledges, ironically on Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day! He continued working towards his Master's Degree but was made a postwar job offer with Arthur Andersen and Arthur Young. This was in June of 1942. Bill never did acquire his Master's Degree, however during his years at Columbia, he met Elizabeth Goodspeed, who he would eventually marry.

Bill Wannen: 1921-2008

Bill Wannen was buried today in a military-style service conducted by the VFW and attended by his four living sons, his former wife, and several grandchilden. The sons spoke lovingly about his being a family man above all else, always willing to help in ways financial and emotional. Jim Logan related an amusing story of Bill's bursting out laughing when forced to lead from a K, which he hated to do, because he had all of them. Ken Mason, Jean McGuire, and Millie Dabbs, his former bridge partners were all in attendance. He was 87.

An autobiographical history of his life, written by Bill, is here.
