Meet Marion Ellingsen

Marion Ellingsen

We would like to tell you a little about one of our more distinguished but humble members of our club — Marion Ellingsen.

Marion was born at home in North Bergen New Jersey. She lived there most of her adolescent life and went to college at Jersey City State Teachers College earning a Bachelors of Science degree. She met her future husband, Arthur, at college. When asked how she met him, she said, “in bed”. She elaborated that she was sick and a local church group sent flowers and Artie was the deliverer. Artie asked her out for New Year’s so she became determined to get better, and did.

Marion taught as a substitute teacher for ten years in Park Ridge, New Jersey. She then taught full-time for an additional twenty years. She mainly taught the third grade and part of her innovative teaching method was to introduce the rudiments of bridge to her third graders. Her husband worked for GM for twenty years and then retired and opened a flower shop.

They had three children, twelve grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. In explanation of the great number of great-grandchildren, she offered that one of her daughters had seven children.

She and Artie moved down here in 1991, and she lives at Timber Pines. Her hobbies used to be dancing and teaching bridge. She directed for a number of years on the fourth Friday, and taught bridge classes for years, and also gave private lessons. She has co-authored two books on bridge — “We Love the Majors” and “Bridge With Bells and Whistles”.

When asked for suggestions to make our club better, she offered that she was recently the victim of the “grandson scam”, and she believes that others in our club may have been exposed to it. She suggests that when a scam comes up for one of our members, the club let the membership know of the scam. When asked what she liked most about our club, she stated that she is so grateful for all the support and help that members and our club gave her in her recent illness.

We are so grateful to have this wonderful woman as a member.

Jim Logan: Platinum LM and My Friend

Friend or foe, curmudgeon or booster, Jim Logan is one of a kind. He and I have had some classic battles at the bridge table – both as partners and as opponents. In all cases, Jim’s class has shown through.

By now, you must have read that Jim passed the 10,000 point plateau and is now a Platinum Life Master. I am proud to say that I have contributed to that gaudy total both as a partner and as an opponent (quiet Somma, -800 is not a good duplicate score).

In each of the past three years, Jim and I have had three 72+% games with a sizzling 76.18% three years ago.  That was one of those rounds where nothing could go wrong and never did.  And the gifts we received had me thinking that my birthday (Christmas Day) was far off but all were well appreciated.

Of course, Jim is a serious player but his sharp wit is never far behind. Recently, after a rather feckless bid on my part and a subsequent -300, Jim informed me that I was being traded for the much-heralded “player to be named later;” a reference to that caveat in baseball terminology, a sport that Jim and I love. Long live Red Sox nation.

Watch for Jim Logan's picture in next month's ACBL Bridge Bulletin. Unlike other advancements in Rank, the crossing of the Platinum threshold is so unusual that members' pictures are published.

Platinum requires 10,000 masterpoints! Congratulations to our best player and a long-time friend of the club.
