“A partnership is an agreement where . . . individuals agree to cooperate to advance their interests,” from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia on the internet. Individuals agree to cooperate is the phrase that definitely applies to a bridge partnership. “Cherish your partner. Respect your opponents.” I don’t know who said it first, but I have read it somewhere. Good advice, but I would like to revise it slightly: “Cherish and respect your partner. Respect your opponents.”
No one is perfect. Some days are good and some days are not so good. When your partner is not having a good day, you are not going to make him feel or perform better if you criticize his bids and/or plays. And he will feel even worse if you follow the criticism with: “It’s just common sense.” Recently I have heard players say that to their partners. In my opinion that is a personal attack, as they may as well have said, “You do not have common sense. You are stupid.” Ouch! Do me a favor and never say, “It’s just common sense” to your partner. |

WOW! That’s the only word that seems appropriate for the path that Adam Kaplan is traveling on in the bridge world. From a mop-headed 7-year-old who didn’t lead his partner’s suit to a robust 14-year-old, Adam now cavorts with the likes of Meckstroth, Rodwell, and Schulte. |

In the article Intermediate 2-Bids, I mentioned that Michael Miller and I play a more complicated set of Responses, and that I would provide those details separately. Since we play a form of Precision, these responses are applicable there and may not be applicable with other systems. The benefits are minor, and possibly illusory, but we like 'em. Spring Hill, FL |
