Our Free Community Luncheon last Thursday was a success. We had 10+ tables of friends and guests who enjoyed the delicious food and fun afternoon of bridge. There were social, contract, duplicate, and even a beginning bridge tables with complete novices. Several are going to be returning for play in 299ers, and for EZ Bridge 1 and EZ Bridge 2.

Bev Tillberry and Annabelle Hills worked extremely hard organizing this event. Thanks to our 299ers who came and made everyone feel welcome and to Reta McCoy, Joanne Waitkus and Christie Bendickson for helping with set up, dishes, etc. Gerry Panos, Mary Ann Dufresne, and Linda Reeder assisted as well.

Reserchers in Singapore have shown a prototype of an energy storage material that would revolutionize devices which use rechargable batteries, such as hybid cars and cell phones, or devices which could use rechargeable batteries but don't because of their high cost and inefficiency, such as wind turbines and solar panels. In ACBL competition, both members of a partnership must use the same system.  They must have two identical convention cards made out for the use of the opponents.  Players must not refer to their own convention card or any aid to their memory.

A PS from Mary Ann:  When I was a novice player just starting to play tournaments, a tournament director imposed a procedural penalty (an 1/8 of a board) because my partner and I did not have identical convention cards.  It can cost you, so be careful!
