Ah, fall is in the air.   We don't experience the beautiful fall colors that the US north and northwest of us does, but we'll settle for the absence of summer's heat and humidity and pretend that a crispness abounds.  Like migrating birds, our Snowbirds are returning to our bridge games and it's good to see all of you!  Welcome back!

Did you know that October 2010 has five Fridays, five Saturdays and five Sundays?    Just a little tidbit I had to throw in.

October has always been special to me....my birth month AND Halloween.  In rural Texas where I lived as a kid, October marked the end of field work for the year (yes, I was a cotton picker and a John Deere driver before I was old enough to start school), and the beginning of the school year (yes, school officially began in September, but most of us didn't attend regularly until that field work was finished).  I always really liked Halloween although we didn't "trick or treat"; the houses were about 1/2 mile apart.  My family celebrated with songs, games, popcorn balls, candy and my Dad's same spooky story every year.  As an added treat, my grandmother would give each of us kids a dime, which in those days bought a lot more candy!

My family had a tradition of turning over a leaf on the wall calendar in the kitchen on the first day of each month.  Whoever had a birthday in a particular month got to stand up on a chair and turn over the calendar leaf.  How exciting it was to see a new picture and mark my birthday each October.  We'd talk about historical events for the month and we'd discuss what we were going to do that month.  I always thought MY month was the best because it had Columbus Day and Halloween. (Too bad I didn't know about Thanksgiving Day in Canada or was that established after my childhood?)   Every year, my older sister reminded me that HER December was more important -- Pearl Harbor, Orville Wright's first flight, Chanukah, and Christmas.  Hard to dispute that.

Well, I'm still having birthdays in October, although I'd like to forget them, but I never want to forget Halloween.  I still feel like a kid and you'd better believe I still wear a costume every year to greet the trick or treaters who come to my door.  Join me in wearing a costume to our bridge party/game on October 29.  Try it; you'll like it, and you'll make my day!!

enjoyed your interesting article, but was confused on the fifth friday, saturday, and sunday statistics.seems that it should happen about every five or six years ,depending on whether there were 1 or 2 leap years in that span.

Hey, Jim, thanks for catching that and of course you are right. The October 5-5-5 happened in 1999 and 2004. I corrected my story and promise to check my sources better. Guess you can't trust every email you get!
Jim, does that 5-5-5 every four or five years happen with every month?
