Mrs. Smith was dismayed as she hung up the telephone. Mrs.
Jones had car trouble and could not attend Mrs. Smith’s weekly Thursday
afternoon bridge game. The other two ladies present convinced Mrs. Smith she
could substitute her son, Billy, a bright 10-year-old.
After a 15-minute bridge
primer, the game began with Billy as dealer. Billy studied his hand and bid 4♣. After two passes, Mrs. Smith, Billy’s RHO, holding a plethora of aces
and kings, doubled. Undeterred, Billy carefully perused his hand and bid 4♦. After two more passes, Mrs. Smith, becoming quite agitated, doubled
again. Not to be denied and after careful consideration, Billy bid 4♥.
Mrs. Smith was near the boiling point as she doubled again.
But Billy, heeding
the advice of his mother to bid the shape of his hand, proudly said, “And 1♠.”

At today's game, Mary Ann duFresne arrived at her next table and found Whit Campbell's convention card had been left behind. Somebody wanted to know who he was playing with, so she read the top line to see, and noticed it was showing his mother, Donis, who wasn't there today.
But she knew who it was -- Don Bowen, her dear friend, who is half Whit's size. So she quipped "Oh, its Half-Whit!"
The room burst out laughing. Good one, Mary Ann!

If you, or any of your children or grand-children should wake up with the following symptom, you've got it. Please don't go to the club for bridge. |

While up here in Minnesota, we took a little side trip to the southwestern part of North Dakota. We happened to pass by the back side of Mount Rushmore, and got some excellent pictures. This is one of my favorites. |

With this year’s Naples’ tournament looming on the horizon, my thoughts turned to an incident that happened a couple of years ago. Three members of our club traveled to Naples together, and had reservations in the Best Western approximately 3 miles south of the playing site. |

Before the final board of a Swiss match between the #1 and #2 teams, South for the #2 team, the dealer, was called away on a family emergency. Needing every board to catch and beat the #1 team, #2 solicited a newbie who was kibitzing to play South. She was told not to worry about systems or conventions and just to bid what she had. |

My wife, Mary Jo, took these pictures of a "house finch," she thinks, which built a nest in an artificial wreath Mary Jo had put up. The wreath was high on a wall, about eight feet off the ground, under the metal roof of our carport.
After a few days of building the nest, the finch laid some eggs and began sitting. Then a crow came along, tore the nest apart and destroyed the eggs.
So the finch rebuilt the nest and laid another clutch of eggs.
Running late in the season, the poor thing had to pant to keep cool enough.
After a few weeks, four chick were hatched, and the male showed up to help keep them fed. They grew rapidly.

In bridge, you must regularly count cards and other events. This drill will assist you in instantly recognizing patterns. While not cards, per se, you should regularly practice counting the black dots at the intersections in the following picture. As in bridge, intense concentration is required. |
