Many of us have tried the Atkins Diet or the South Beach Diet, which emphasize consuming few carbs and much protein. Now, research has shown (in animals) that low-carb, high-protein diets may reduce both tumor growth and cancer risk. Click here for an article describing the results.

This is not a joke. Dennis Desjardin, a researcher at San Francisco State University discovered a new species of mushroom in Borneo, and named it Spongiforma squarepantsii. Here's a link: click here.

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica - where do they go? Wonder no more. It's a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extremely ordered and complex life. The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintaining a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life. If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into and buried. The male penguins then gather in a circle round the fresh grave and sing, with bagpipe accompaniment, if available: |

Day 10: By morning, Gerry had returned to almost normal. As we headed to the bridge room for the morning lesson, we listened to the announcement by the captain. “This is your captain speaking. We have a medical emergency on board which is beyond our ability to provide service. We have been in touch with Miami hospitals and the Coast Guard and are taking steps to get care for the individual. We are going full speed ahead and will arrive in Cape Liberty at 10:00pm tonight instead of our scheduled arrival time of 7:00am tomorrow morning. There will be medical personnel there to evacuate the emercency patient. Everyone else will remain on the ship until tomorrow morning. The time change will take place at 12:00 Noon today.” |

Day 10 was the first day of three days at sea leading up to our return to Port Liberty. It was an unusual day in that nothing unusual happened. Our morning class was attended by 25 players; the game also attracted 25 players. One of the players approached me after class and introduced himself as a 35 year veteran of cruise directing. That surprised me as he and his wife had not missed a lesson. They told me how much they were enjoying the bridge on the cruise. If there had been a “perfect attendance” award, they would have received one. Actually, at least 20 players had perfect attendance. |

Days 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 were all port days. Gerry was anticipating seeing everything there was to see on the islands and shopping 'till she dropped. I, however, preferred a quick walking tour with no shopping and a return to the ship where I could have a wonderful lunch, chill by the pool and participate in shipboard activities, especially bridge. |

One item I forgot to mention for day three is that it was the night of the Captain’s dinner. This is the most elegant night of the cruise, one of the reasons we had packed our fabulous evening wear. But remember, I had laryngitis that day and besides not being able to speak, felt spent. Gerry wouldn’t go to the dinner alone so we both missed this big event. The players asked me to post notices that there would be informal bridge every day that we were in port. The activities director added this to the daily bulletin. |
