This hand is also from the archives of Richard Chesley. In fourth seat, you hold: ♠-J10xxx, ♥-AQxxxx, ♦-void, ♣-Ax. Partner opens a 15-17 NT, RHO passes, and you bid 2 Clubs. Partner bids 2 Diamonds and It’s Your Call. Jim’s analysis: if you are playing Smolen, a bid of 3♠ shows five hearts and four spades. But you are 5-6 in the majors and the diamond void sure makes this hand look like slam, but in what “strain” as the pros call it.With this odd-shaped hand, I wouldn’t use Stayman for my first call. Bid a 2♦ transfer over 1 NT, then jump to 3♠ after partner bids 2♥. Hopefully, partner gets the message. By the way, partner held: ♠-AKx, ♥-Kxx, ♦-Jxxx, ♣-KQx, and 7♥ was cold when all the suits cooperated.
