This hand is from the archives of Richard Chesley.  You are red and the opponents are white.

In fourth seat, you hold: ♠-AKQxx, ♥-AKxx, ♦-void, ♣-Qxxx.

Partner opens 2♥ (weak) and RHO overcalls 3♦.

“It’s Your Call.”

Jim’s analysis: unless partner is on a suicide mission, he/she must have 6 hearts to the Q and 4+ HCP somewhere else. We assume partner’s vulnerable open is in the 5-10 HCP range.  If none of those points are in diamonds, partner could have as little as the king of clubs or any combination of the ace, king, and jack of clubs.

Jim’s call is 4NT (1430 for hearts).  Okay folks, partner shows one ace and  you bid 6♥!  With my luck, that ace is in diamonds and RHO cashes the ace and king of clubs! Thanks Richard.

Exclusion Blackwood or Voidwood will provide your answer: 2h - 3d - 5d. If partner shows one ace outside of Diamonds, bid 7H. If partner shows no aces outside of Diamonds, bid 6H. Partner is on QJ6th or J107th in Hearts, so even if the Heart Queen is offside (a good possibility), there is no trump loser. Unless your partner is a total freelancer, in 1st seat (at this relative vulnerability) she will not have opened 2H with six or seven Hearts and the AK of Diamonds. Ergo, lacking the Ace of Clubs, she must hold the King. As a follow-up, will partner know what to do when your LHO bids 6D? 7D?
