In a recent CNN interview, Bill Gates was asked how he wanted to be remembered. As the founder of Microsoft? As the greatest philanthropist of his generation? Without hesitation he replied: "As Warren Buffett's bridge partner."

Guess we bridge players know what's important!

C
arl McGiffin sent me this test of your powers of concentration. It may not seem related to Duplicate Bridge, but I suggest you take the test and see if you concentrate hard enough. Presumably, the better you can concentrate, the better you'll bid and play.

I must warn you that females normally can't get this right. Also, people older than about 60 seem unable to concentrate well enough. There's an IQ factor as well, of course. Click here to take the test.

Leave comments below, but don't spoil the test for others. {easycomments}

Dick Crowley lives at Glen Lakes and wants to get back to duplicate playing after several years absence. I'm not clear about his masterpoints or level of expertise, but he has duplicate experience and plays frequently online. If you are looking for a partner, contact Dick at (352) 597-5308, (727) 297-4174, or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Let's make him welcome!

The Hernando County Shrine Club has acknowledged HBA's contribution from Charity Games by awarding a beautiful plaque.  Unfortunately, we have no appropriate place to hang such a thing, but we're publishing it here, at least.

Bill Wannen was buried today in a military-style service conducted by the VFW and attended by his four living sons, his former wife, and several grandchilden. The sons spoke lovingly about his being a family man above all else, always willing to help in ways financial and emotional. Jim Logan related an amusing story of Bill's bursting out laughing when forced to lead from a K, which he hated to do, because he had all of them. Ken Mason, Jean McGuire, and Millie Dabbs, his former bridge partners were all in attendance. He was 87.

An autobiographical history of his life, written by Bill, is here.

“C
ould be short...” I wonder how many times Bill said that. And I wonder how many deviled eggs he prepared for our Brooksville bridge games. Likewise, I wonder how many chairs he moved to accommodate our bridge players. He was always there with that energy, that winning smile and pleasant personality.

Regionals Emphasized,
Sectionals De-emphasized

T
he ACBL Board of Directors has voted to raise the standards for Life Master, to add a new Rank, and to eliminate a current Rank. For members joining in 2010 and beyond, the requirements for Life Master have nearly doubled, a new Rank has been added (Advanced NABC Master), and Bronze Life Master has been eliminated. Current members are not affected, unless they drop out and re-join after 2009.

In other actions, the Board authorized the formation of a new Unit in District 7 comprising a single county in southeastern Georgia. This is noteworthy in view of the recent effort to form a new Unit here, which failed for lack of interest. The population of the new Unit is 73,000, much smaller than Hernando county, let alone the entire Nature Coast area. With the increased emphasis on Regionals caused by the new LM requirements, the failure of our Unit effort may have a large effect on local players in times to come.
