My wife, Mary Jo, took these pictures of a "house finch," she thinks, which built a nest in an artificial wreath Mary Jo had put up. The wreath was high on a wall, about eight feet off the ground, under the metal roof of our carport.

After a few days of building the nest, the finch laid some eggs and began sitting. Then a crow came along, tore the nest apart and destroyed the eggs.

So the finch rebuilt the nest and laid another clutch of eggs.

Running late in the season, the poor thing had to pant to keep cool enough.

After a few weeks, four chick were hatched, and the male showed up to help keep them fed. They grew rapidly.

Today, they were discovered.

This was such a beautiful story until the last chapter. Call me weird but I was more saddened about those tiny birds than I was about M. Jackson. (Better defend myself: birdies were helpless; M. Jackson made choices that possibly contributed to his demise.)
Wisely, I'm remaining Anonymous on this one!

This was very upsetting. Please don't write any more like it.

I understand. I too, was quite upset.

I had a hard time consoling Mary Jo, who spent weeks watching the saga, and this was a sort of memorial to the birds for her. Misguided, perhaps, but a memorial nevertheless.

She insisted I kill the snake, which I did, with relish.

And now snakes' rights will be challenged! Snake lovers/enthusiasts will dislike your actions. You're not winning on this one.
