No Afternoon Game, Friday, June 1

Friday, December 30, 2011

Three club members, Beverly Tillberry, Annabelle Hills, and Gerry Panos, have launched an effort to start a Social Duplicate Bridge Game on Thursday afternoons.  No start date was specified, but an open letter has been sent to NCBC members for posting in their communities or forwarding to their non-member friends.

The letter is directed at bridge players or would-be bridge players who desire a non-competitive but supervised duplicate bridge environment. Lessons will be offered before the game. A charge of $3 will be made to play, and a separate $3 will be charged per lesson.

The game will be sanctioned by the ACBL and masterpoints will be awarded. However, players with more than 20 masterpoints may not play.

We now know why the Board voted at the last meeting to change the policy for using the club's facilities.

One wonders whether the Board as a whole was aware of this plan which apparently has been in the works for some time. No discussion was presented in the minutes.

I notice that the motion was made by Annabelle and seconded by Gerry, two of the persons launching the new game.

The Board should consider whether to allow this game, whether to rescind that policy change, and whether the club's name should be removed from the announcement letter.

Thank you Bev... Count me in.

Our lessons on Thursday are a continuation of Easybridge! which the board approved a year and a half ago to bring new players into the club. The "new" game, as you call it, was also approved by the board and has been sanctioned for Thursday afternoons for about the same length of time. These two activities and our community luncheon, also held on Thursday, are the funnels that bring new players into the club. We pay for use of the club on Thursday and should get the greatest benefit we can from it.

Pat, If you are going to make comments on what is going on at the club, such as the above editorial, please come to the board meetings so you are aware of what has been discussed and approved.

Is Board approval required for this new game? No, according to the policy adopted just 2 weeks ago. (The former policy would not have allowed it.)

Was the new policy specifically crafted to allow this game? Maybe -- or maybe it's just some cosmic coincidence.

Did the board approve this game? Probably not. It's not in the minutes. If not, then NCBC's name should not appear in the letter.

Did the Board approve the price of this game? Maybe. It's not in the minutes, but it is required by the bylaws.

Does the Board wish a new game to be established while other games' existence and structure is being debated by the Board? Unknown.

Good grief, Pat. Where have you been the past 1 1/2 years? Annabelle, Tony, Gerry, Bev, Carl McGiffin, myself have all been certified as presenters of EZBridge! and have been bringing in new players through these sessions, The students then move into 299ers and We Love the Majors etc! It has been approved by the Board long ago. Meetings are always posted. You are welcome to attend.

I don't object to the game, per se. What I object to the the manner in which a new permanent game was started, without Board action.

EasyBridge and other educational efforts did not constitute a new game. Instead, they were not sanctioned, or had a limited schedule, with a beginning and an ending. The games played were not really Bridge, or were for practice of the lessons.

This game is certainly NOT a continuation of those efforts, but advertises itself to be for social players to enjoy the benefits of club membership for an indefinite period. It's a real game -- it needs official action by the Board.
