As originally envisioned, a separate beginner's game would allow newcomers to become familiar with the mechanics of Duplicate Bridge, without the stress of strict rules and director calls interfering with their learning. But now it seems to have become a separate club and is destroying the parent.

Originally, the newcomer masterpoint limit was just 0-20, and the Open game had strats of 0-300, 300-1000, and 1000+ or thereabout. But when the newcomer limit was raised to 299, many former Open pairs began playing in the newcomer game, even though they were not newcomers.

An effort was made to balance the strats after several pairs in the 300+ range no longer played because they often had an insufficient number of pairs to quality. Plus pairs with 200 points could earn MPs far easier (in the 299er game) than players with 400 could in the Open game.

I suggest the newcomers game be restricted to 0-20, and the Open game be restratified to give everybody a fair deal. Otherwise, the decline being seen in the Wednesday Open game will continue, and will spread to Tuesday, then Friday (apparently) and Monday.

There is no question that it is now two clubs, with the 299 people having the upper hand. No consideration is given to the REAL senior members who have been in the club 15 or more years(and have gotten their points the hard way) maybe their skills are fading a little. They are being driving out of some of the games because of lack of balance in the group.

As a newcomer I would like it to be 0-20 or 0-99

I agree with both Pat and Charlie. We have lost some of our old time players. The newcomer who wants 0-20 will stay at that level unless he plays in regular games. You don't grow in this game without competing with the best. You play against them and improve your game and yet have a chance to win at your own level. Only happens in bridge. I have said so often it is a Grand Game and you learn something new everytime you play.

The original problem is/was:

Why can't Open players find 4 more players (1 table) to play in the Open games on Wednesdays?

Should not be too difficult with the numbers of players we have. We average of 9-10 tables on Mon and Fri. Enough on Tues, and enough on Thurs. nite (altho, sometimes only 3 tables on Thurs., and we still have fun!) I wonder why we cannot find enough Open players for Wednesdays?

What is the problem? Trying to play too many times a week? Yeh, we are getting older, but that does not seem to be a good excuse...some are passing away...are we still a friendly group...Is anyone taking the time to find just 4 more players to play on Wednesdays? Just a thought..

Who in the Open would be willing to play on Wednesdays? Anyone taken a poll?

I have been a member and board member of NCBC. When we originated the 0-299 games, I was on the board and I advised the board that the strata was too broad. That is still the case. We need to narrow the 0-299 game on Tues. and Wed. to 0-50 at most. It is not a place for beginners to hang out indefinitely. It is a place for beginners to learn the elements of duplicate play and to mature and move into the open game. Most bridge teachers will agree that anyone who is serious about their bridge should be capable of playing in the open game after a year. Pat Peterson does not allow her students to hang out in a beginner game, and she knows what she is doing. Her open games are growing and prospering annually. Our open games are losing players and we have no one willing to step up and fill the void. We also have a fractious relationship between the open players and the 0-299er's; it is a very divided club! It is not about masterpoints cheaply earned. Duplicate is a competitive game. If people want social bridge, why not start a social game?

The problem is the open game on Tues. & Wed is no longer a balanced game. The # of points a member has is not a true reflection on their skills. If you have been playing long enough any average player will build up there points. In our game it is a good thing many members increase there skills while still low in points. It is also a fact that many member with higher points might be in the stage of decreaseing skills.Everyone should enjoy playing against a good player, but if you are not in a balanced game you do not enjoy playing all 24 hands against the outstanding players. That is way the open Tues. & Wed. games have just become the outstanding players. If this has become a business maybe renting 5 days a week is too much.
