A total of 118 pencils were received during the two week program. Howard Coley returned 40 authentic NCBC pencils and was awarded the prize of one free bridge play.

Since pencils are still missing, Policewoman Millie Dabbs prepared the following report in an effort to resolve the pencil disappearance situation:

Pencil Disappearance Mystery

We thank each of you who recovered and returned pencils, thereby allowing the club to operate more efficiently. Unfortunately, we have not been able to recover some of the missing pencils in our amnesty program. We are now trying to decide whether or not to conduct a pencil disappearance study. The following theories exist:

1. Evaporation - Did the pencils just evaporate in thin air during the hot summer?

2. Erase-ification - Did each pencil’s eraser turn on the rest of the pencil and erase/consume it? A particularly vicious virus!

3. Decomposition due to de-darkification – Did the pencils just decompose in the cabinet because it was so dark? If proven to have happened, are other supplies in jeopardy? Should night lights be installed?

4. Migration – Did the pencils fly south for the winter? If so, will they return in the spring? Should blankets be provided for those remaining brave pencils?

5. Hibernation – Has the cabinet been searched for possible sleeping pencils? Very small places should be thoroughly examined since pencils tend to lose weight during this inactive period.

While we feel we have this mystery under control, we will appreciate other theories or suggestions you might have to solve this serious pencil situation.

Thank you.

I must admit, I've never even heard of de-darkification, and never would have thought it could be responsible.

But now that you mention it, it does explain a lot. About missing pencils, policewomen, and so forth.
