No Afternoon Game, Friday, June 1

There must have been at least a half dozen director calls Friday for Opening lead out of turn.

There are a couple of very good practices players should adopt which can prevent this from ever happening.

The first is for all players to leave the bidding cards on the table until the lead is made.

The second is to always make the opening

lead face down. The "leader" should ask his partner, "Any questions?" Then, when all questions have been asked and answered, turn the card face up. ACBL does not require us to leave the bidding cards out but it really is a good practice. They do require us to lead "face down." Read Law 41, Commencement of Play.

If I am declarer and my RHO starts to lead, is it ok to tell him I'm declarer and his partner is on lead? Or must I just let him lead, then call the director? How about my partner who is going to be dummy--can he say anything if the wrong opponent is about to lead a card? Please tell me what can and cannot be done in either case. Thanks much.

There is nothing stopping you from telling an opponent who is beginning to lead out of turn that it is not his turn to lead. Most of us would do that with beginning players. If you are asked, you must tell him and if you tell him its his lead when it isn't, you render the lead legal. However, in the open game, it is better strategy to let the player lead out of turn, call the director, and take advantage of one of the options you will be given. In my experience, the lead is usually on the table before any of the other players notice, so the proper action is to call the director.
