logoHow to Peel a Banana -- Duh! Print E-mail
Annabelle Hills

Recently I spend some time trying to peel a banana, ending up grabbing a knife and severing the stalk from the top in order to break the skin to start the peel moving downwards.  As often happens, (karma, kismet, whatever) while watching TV that might, the host addressed that very topic.  He was expounding on how humans often have trouble peeling bananas.  He went on to ask if you have ever watched a monkey peel a banana.  They turn the banana upside down and peel from the bottom of the banana!  Well, having an innate scientific nature and a curiosity that has to be satisfied, the next morning I turned my banana upside down and attempted to peel it.  Would you  believe it, it peeled quickly and smoothly.  Evolved to a higher level than monkeys?  Maybe in some ways but not in peeling bananas.  Maybe we could teach monkeys to play bridge!

[Plus, you end up with a handle for that last bite.  Ed.]

I thought this approach to peeling a banana was nothing more than monkey business, but I tried it anyway.

It worked to my surprise. Now I won't have carry a knife with me to start the peeling process.

Those monkeys came up with this because they don't carry a knife. Smart little devils are they not?

Monkey see, monkey do. People see, people do. I thought everyone had that banana peeling skill; I've been doing it ever since I was a little girl and saw a monkey peel a banana at Herman Park in Houston. All these years I could have been educating people!
