Bridge Will Make You Smart – and Keep You Smart!
Contract bridge is experiencing a resurgence amid research that playing the card game not only may make kids smarter, but keeps players smarter longer.
When stories of competition are revolving around aging quarterbacks and lab rat outfielders, here's one about how some Minnesotans...ended up with the New York Times proclaiming them "giant-killers." Let's go to the replay, Skip: Here we are at the Summer North American Contract Bridge Championships, watching as two-time national champs from Florida's District 9 are -- can it be? -- faltering against this Midwestern Cinderella team from District 14. Are the defending champs going down? Yes! The Minnesotans win! Do you believe in miracles?!?! The "giant-killers" were Cynthia and Bob Balderson of Eden Prairie, Peggy Kaplan of Minnetonka, Carole Miner of Rochester, Paul Meerschaert of Eagan and Bill Kent of Iowa City, Iowa. Grand National Teams Open - 16 Tables / Based on 35 Tables MPs Rank Names 100.00 1 Kyle Larsen, San Francisco CA; Rose Meltzer, Los Gatos CA; Chip Martel - Jan Martel, Davis CA; Sally Woolsey - Kit Woolsey, Kensington CA 75.00 2 Joe Grue - John Hurd - Kevin Bathurst - Shane Blanchard - Robert Blanchard - Brian Glubok, New York NY ... 4-way tie for 5th were: Bob Balderson Jr - Cynthia Balderson, Eden Prairie MN; Peggy Kaplan, Minnetonka MN; Bill Kent, Iowa City IA; Carole Miner, Rochester MN; Paul Meerschaert, Saint Paul MN And the Grand National Teams wasn't a fluke. Peggy Kaplan, the leader of this silver-wolf wolf pack, won the NABC Fast Pairs, tied for 15th in the Spingold KO Teams, tied for 6th in the Sunday AX Swiss, and won 157.02 masterpoints during the Summer Nationals in Washington, D.C. In total, the GNT District 14 champs amassed 293.47 masterpoints. [By comparison, Adam Kaplan earned 71.75 masterpoints while my sweethearts from Boca, Brooke and Flaxman, only picked up 15.84 a piece.] So, if you want to get smart and stay smart, drink your orange juice, eat your spinach, ‘exercise’ 3 to 90 minutes a day (dependent on your style) - and play plenty of Bridge, early and long.
