Before the final board of a Swiss match between the #1 and #2 teams, South for the #2 team, the dealer, was called away on a family emergency. Needing every board to catch and beat the #1 team, #2 solicited a newbie who was kibitzing to play South. She was told not to worry about systems or conventions and just to bid what she had. All vulnerable, with the opponents passing throughout, she opened 1C, her partner bid 2H, she bid 2S, partner bid 3C, she bid 3H, partner bid 4NT, and she bid 7D. Finally, LHO came to life and doubled. The opening lead was the King of Spades. She made her contract (+2330) for a 20 IMP swing that won the match and the Swiss for her team. At the other table, North had played 6H and, getting the Club 9 opening, misplayed the hand to go down one for -100. (6H can be made, but even the 14 IMP swing would have been enough for #2 to win.) The hands in play were: North ♠:KQ108 ♠:76542 ♥:J1097 ♥:8 ♦:Q10 ♦:J9 ♣:KJ8 ♣:987632 South [Attribution: Bridge Urban Legends from the Internet]
