In a blatant attempt to steal the Pencil Roundup contest, an anonymous entrant submitted several HUNDRED pencils by mail. Besides being late, this entrant attempted to win the $2 award by spending untold dollars on new pencils and shipping them here from the hinterlands. This person made an attempt to pass these pencils off as club pencils, by intermixing them with stubs and ballpoint pens from an unknown source.

In unrelated news, Fran Cochran has arrived safely in her annual trip "up north" after spending the winter here. Coincidentally, it is believed she entered the Pencil Roundup while she was here, finishing out of the running.

The blatant gall this unknown person has! We're lucky we anticipated this sort of behavior and cut the entries off at a specific date. No lawyer, no matter how good he is, will be able to undo our results.

Nice try, devious person!

I have an update. When I submitted the shipping container to the Postmaster's Mail-Fraud unit, they noticed the package had a return address on it! The Postal Service estimates the investigation will have preliminary results very quickly, perhaps even by 2015. This sort of investigation (pencil fraud) is relatively uncommon, (most arch-criminals use ink) so they have little experience with it. But at least its free.

In addition, the DNA testing lab reported that their initial review indicates that all of the new pencils had apparently been "wiped down" and were clear of any DNA. They recommended further testing, at $4,000 per pencil and about 3 weeks each. The Board will have to authorize such an expenditure, I assume.

The fingerprint analysis has been foiled. It seems I inadvertantly touched the pencils myself in unpacking them. No doubt the unsub knew this would happen.

Inspector Jacques Clouseau of the Mail-Fraud unit just called to say the return address label was from Mongolia, which he suspects is a ruse, since the package was clearly labeled US Postal Service. He doubts the US Postal Service has post-offices in Mongolia, but will check.

The country code was MN, which is registered to Mongolia, according to this website: http://www.iana.org/domains/root/db/mn.html
