UNFORGETTABLE HANDS
NEGATIVE, PARTNER? - Playing with a first-time partner, she opens 1 Club, RHO bids 3 Hearts and you double - it goes all pass. You were playing negative double through 3 Spades and your partner was playing negative through 2 Spades. They make 3 Hearts doubled and you are cold for 4 Spades. (The following hands are courtesy of John Cleary, now of Brazil, formerly of Spring Hill, John is a terrific player and he has many great stories to tell) TEXAS, ANYONE? - Partner opens 1 NT and you bid 4 Hearts only to hear three passes. You are in a 2-2 fit when you are cold for 6 Spades. TORONTO TORNADO - In Toronto in 1982, John and his partner have made the finals of the open pairs, With three hands left to play, John’s partner (North) opens 1 Club, and after RHO passes, John bids 1 Spade. John explains. “I’m a true Walsh player. I only bid diamonds in front of a major. If I have a two-bid hand (10+ HCP), it lets LHO make a cheap bid; sometimes you lose your fit if they pre-empt. I thought if RHO did not bid hearts, they must be on my left. Partner can double or bid NT, so I bid 1S (we can play in a 4-3 fit). My partner had the same idea and he bid 2 Spades. The full hand: ![]() The HK is led, followed by the queen which I ruff. I cash the top clubs and the DA and cross-ruff the red suits for 9 tricks and +140. This is a top worth 25 MP’s and we win the event by 1 MP. Don’t try this at home! Sincerely, Jim Somma
